2013 yılından beri sürdürmekte olduğumuz Marmara Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi ve California College of the Arts (CCA) arasındaki işbirliğinin ürünlerini, 3 Temmuz 2015 tarihinden itibaren, Cumhuriyet Müzesi'nde sergiliyoruz. Dördü San Francisco'da olmak üzere sekizinci kez gerçekleştirdiğimiz sergide, MÜGSF ve CCA 'tan projeye katılan kırk iki öğrencinin eserleri ziyaretçilerle buluşuyor.
We are exhibiting the products of the collaboration between Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts and California College of the Arts (CCA), which we have been continuing since 2013, at the Cumhuriyet Museum as of July 3, 2015. In the exhibition that we held for the eighth time, four of which were in San Francisco, the works of forty-two students participating in the project from MÜGSF and CCA are presented to visitors.

We interviewed Nilhan Değirmenci from the exhibition "Locality and Universal Discourses".
The products of the collaboration between Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts and California College of the Arts (CCA), whose theme this year is "Localities & Global Discourses" and which has been continuing since 2013, will be exhibited at the Republic Museum as of July 3, 2015.
Bize biraz kendinden ve akademik sürecinden bahseder misin?
28 Nisan 1987 İstanbul, Beyoğlu doğumluyum. Marmara Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi Heykel bölümü mezunuyum. Şu an aynı üniversitede Tekstil üzerine Yüksek Lisans yapmaktayım.
Heykele ilgin ilk ne zaman başladı?
Enerji dolu bir çocuktum her zaman. Halende öyle biriyim aslında. Mesela, bir yerlerden düşsem de kolumu bacağımı kırsam gibi takıntım vardı 13 yaşıma kadar. Canım annem alışkanlıktan her gün eve yeni bir yarayla geldiğimi görünce sadece bakıp,”Deli bu çocuk. Ölmese iyi bari.” der yürür ve geçerdi yanımdan. Aslında o zamanlar sanat yeteneğim olduğunu annem ve ablam fark etmişlerdi ben daha kendimi çocuk olarak yeni yeni keşfederken. O sıralar dünya umurumda değildi hani. Annem bunu hep bilirdi ve beni bu yönde teşvik etti. Bunu özellikle kendime zarar vermemem için bir tür enerji boşalımı olarak gördüğü resim yapma yöntemiyle gidermek istedi ve tabi beni ortaokul çağlarında çizim kursuna yönlendirdi. Böylece biraz olsun çizim isteğim artmıştı. Zaman içinde büyürken isteklerim de değişti tabi.
Liseden sonra hemen hemen sanat ve felsefe ile ilgili her konuyla ilgilenmeye başladım. Bu yüzden üniversite hayatım geç başladı. Pek çok farklı işte çalıştım bu süre zarfında. Hayatı tanımak istedim. Tabi kendimi bulmamda en büyük faktör üniversite hayatım oldu. Farklı konular üzerinde çalışmayı severdim hep. Mesela son zamanlarda kadın bedeni üzerine çalışıyorum. Bedenden besleniyorum. Bedeni kendim yeniden tanımlayıp bedenleştiriyorum.
Disiplinler arası etkileşime inandığım için 2014 yılında Tekstil bölümüne girmeye karar verdim. Bir süredir kadın bedeni üzerine örme tekniğini kullanma ve kadın bedenine adapte etme, bütünleştirme hevesiyle projeler ve fikirler üzerinde çalışmaktayım.
Peki bu proje nasıl başladı?
Bu senekinin ilk ayağından beri vardım aslında. California Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi ve Marmara Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi arasında geçen ve iki şehri konu alan bir proje bu. Her yarıyıl döneminde konular değişiyor. Ben, hem birinci yarıyıl hem ikinci yarıyıl çalışmalarında yer aldım.
İlk dönem konu çok kültürlülük ve kimlik başlığı altında toplandı ve bende “kadın” olgusu üzerinde bir çalışma gerçekleştirdim. Kadının her iki kültürde etkileşimine dairdi projem. Genel olarak İstanbul bazlı gerçekleşti.
Bu dönem de yerellik ve evrensel söylemler konusuna yönelik değindiğim çalışma LGBT bireyler üzerineydi. Amaç yeni bir şey yaratmak değildi, var olanı sergilemekti. Olanı gözler önüne koymak.
Çalışmama konu olan çok sevgili arkadaşım Can Yaman’la birlikte çalışmak istedim, yani seninle.
Yerellik ve evrensellik özünde LGBT varoluşunu nerede görüyorsun?
Evrensel olarak LGBT’lerin temel bir dili var. Buna rağmen zorunlu bir marjinallik algısı var. Bunu yıkmak amacınıza destek vermek istedim. Benim tüm dünyadaki LGBT oluşumlarından algıladığım, nereye gidilirse gidilsin ortak bir dilde toplanmaları. “Ne olursan ol gel” bu oluşumların genel bir sözü bence. Ben de bu etkiyi yarattı. Evrensel hareketin özünde sevilmek ve kabul görmek olduğunu düşünüyorum. Yerel bazda İstanbullu bir LGBT bireyin gözünden kendi var oluş sürecini anlatmasını, paylaşmasını istedim.
Aynı dil üzerinden şiddet ve ayrımcılık da beslenebiliyor. Senin için bunun karşılığı nedir?
Toplumundaki LGBT karşılığının altında derin bir tabu yattığını düşünüyorum. Kimse neden bunu yaptığını bilmiyor. Size yapılanın altında “bilinmezlik” yattığının inancındayım. Bir nevi cehalet ve Amerikan Senatosu’ndan çıkan “eşcinsel evliliğin yasaldır” kararının bu cehalete verilmiş en iyi cevap olduğu kanısındayım.
Ama aynı süreçte Türkiye’de düzenlenen 13. Onur Yürüyüşüne devlet müdahalesi oldu...
Bu saldırının arkasında bir öç alma var. Gerçekleşen üzücü olaylar seçim sonuçlarına hükümetin bir tepkisidir.
Evet, Amerika’da sevgi kazandı ama ne yazık ki sevgi kadar şiddetin de dilinin evrensel olduğunu biliyor ve deneyimliyoruz. Peki, bu projenin onaylanmasında California Üniversitesi’nin bulunduğu San Francisco eyaletinin genel LGBT tarihsel hareketinin başkenti olmasında bir payı var mı?
Büyük bir ihtimalle. Amerikalılar bu konularla ilgileniyorlar ve projemi beğendiler. İmkanlar dahilinde bu konunun muhatabı olan bir bireyin gözünden bakmak istedim. Yerel bir bakış açısından evrensel bir söyleme tercüman olmak istedim. “Freddie Mercury’nin Askerleyiz” sloganını sahiplenip, sarı tuğlalı yol metaforuyla o yolda ilerlemeyi amaç edinmiş İstanbullu bir gey, bunun en somut göstergesidir bence.
Sergi bilgilerini vermek ister misin?
Evet, tabi. Sergimiz 30 Temmuz’a kadar Marmara Üniversitesi Cumhuriyet Müzesi - Sultanahmet Meydanı’nda görülebilir. Benim dışımda sergide iki sanatçı arkadaşımın daha LGBT varoluşu üzerine çalışmaları sergilenmekte.
Son olarak eklemek istediklerin?
Ben gey değilim ama tanıdığım ve hayatıma dokunan insanlar arasında LGBT bireylerin yeri büyük. Bu, zamanla kendimi onların yerine koymamı sağladı. Onların gözünden dünyayı görmeye çalıştım ve buda onların yaşadıklarına karşı duyarlılığımı arttırdı. Bu projemi size ithaf etmek istedim. İleride de bu gibi projelere gerçekleştirmek istiyorum.
İlerisi için planlar nelerdir?
Yüksek Lisans eğitimim halen devam etmekte. Bundan sonra tekstille ilgili projelerime sizi daha fazla dahil etmek istiyorum. Ben kapı kirişinden sadece anlamsız ve basit laflar atıp böm böm bakan biri değilim. Nefret duygusunu hayatımda hiçbir şekilde barındırmamaya özen göstermeye çalışıyorum. İnsanlar kim ya da ne olursa olsun, nereden gelirse gelsin onları her şekilde kabul etmekten yanayım. Farkındalığın ve sevginin gerçekliğine inanıyorum.
Dorothy’nin yüzü bir gün Türkiye’de de gülecek. Benim inancım budur.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your academic process?
I was born on April 28, 1987 in Beyoğlu, Istanbul. I graduated from Marmara Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture. I am currently doing a Master's degree in Textile at the same university.
When did your interest in sculpture first begin?
I was always an energetic child. Actually, I still am that person. For example, until I was 13, I was obsessed with falling down somewhere and breaking my arm or leg. When my dear mother saw me coming home with a new wound every day out of habit, she just looked at me and said, "This kid is crazy." "It's better if she doesn't die." she would walk and pass me. In fact, my mother and sister noticed that I had artistic talent back then, when I was just discovering myself as a child. You know, I didn't care about the world at that time. My mother always knew this and encouraged me in this direction. She wanted to eliminate this by painting, which she saw as a kind of energy discharge so that I would not harm myself, and of course she directed me to a drawing course when I was in middle school. Thus, my desire to draw increased a little. Of course, as I grew up over time, my desires also changed.
After high school, I became interested in almost every subject related to art and philosophy. That's why my university life started late. I worked in many different jobs during this time. I wanted to know life. Of course, the biggest factor in finding myself was my university life. I always liked working on different subjects. For example, lately I have been working on the female body. I am nourished by the body. I redefine and embody the body myself.
Since I believe in interdisciplinary interaction, I decided to get into the Textile department in 2014. I have been working on projects and ideas for a while with the enthusiasm of using the knitting technique on the female body and adapting and integrating it into the female body.
So how did this project start?
Actually, I've been there since the first part of this year's event. This is a project between California University of Fine Arts and Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, covering two cities. Topics change every semester. I took part in the studies in both the first semester and the second semester.
In the first semester, the topic was gathered under the title of multiculturalism and identity, and I carried out a study on the phenomenon of "woman". My project was about the interaction of women in both cultures. It was generally based in Istanbul.
During this period, the study I mentioned regarding locality and universal discourses was on LGBT individuals. The aim was not to create something new, but to showcase what existed. To reveal what is.
I wanted to work with my dear friend Can Yaman, who is the subject of my work, that is, with you.
Where do you see LGBT existence in its essence of locality and universality?
Universally, LGBT people have a basic language. Despite this, there is a necessary perception of marginality. I wanted to support your aim to destroy this. What I perceive from LGBT organizations all over the world is that they gather with a common language wherever they go. I think "Come whoever you are" is a general saying of these formations. It had this effect on me too. I think the essence of universal movement is to be loved and accepted. I wanted to tell and share own process of existence from the perspective of an LGBT individual from Istanbul on a local basis.
Violence and discrimination can also be fueled through the same language. What does this mean for you?
I think there is a deep taboo underlying the LGBT counterpart in society. Nobody knows why they do this. I believe that "unknown" lies behind what was done to you. It is a kind of ignorance, and I believe that the decision "gay marriage is legal" passed by the American Senate is the best answer to this ignorance.
But during the same period, there was state intervention in the 13th Pride March held in Turkey...
There is revenge behind this attack. The sad events that took place are a reaction of the government to the election results.
Yes, love won in America, but unfortunately we know and experience that the language of violence is as universal as love. So, does the fact that San Francisco, where the University of California is located, the capital of the general LGBT historical movement, have a role in the approval of this project?
Most probably. Americans are interested in these issues and they liked my project. As much as possible, I wanted to look at this issue from the perspective of an individual who is the addressee. I wanted to translate a universal discourse from a local perspective. I think a gay man from Istanbul who adopted Freddie Mercury's slogan "We are in the Soldiers" and aimed to follow that path with the metaphor of the yellow brick road is the most concrete indicator of this.
Would you like to provide exhibition information?
Yes of course. Our exhibition can be seen at Marmara University Republic Museum - Sultanahmet Square until July 30. Apart from me, two more artist friends' works on LGBT existence are exhibited in the exhibition.
Lastly, anything you want to add?
I am not gay, but LGBT people have a big place among the people I know and who touch my life. Over time, this allowed me to put myself in their shoes. I tried to see the world through their eyes, and this increased my sensitivity to their experiences. I wanted to dedicate this project to you. I want to carry out projects like this in the future.
What are the plans for the future?
My master's degree is still continuing. From now on, I want to include you more in my textile-related projects. I'm not someone who just shouts meaningless and simple words and stares from the door beam. I try to be careful not to harbor feelings of hatred in my life in any way. I am in favor of accepting people in every way, no matter who or what they are or where they come from. I believe in the reality of awareness and love.
One day Dorothy's face will smile in Turkey too. This is my belief.
